TI and ARM tease Cortex A8 successors – Cortex A9 and core code-named Eagle

ARM and Texas Instruments tease with what is to come – by the end of the year, we’ll see the successor of the Cortex A8 core, the Cortex A9 (obviously), and its successor too – the core codenamed Eagle…The ARM Cortex A9 will start shipping in Texas Instrument’s OMAP systems-on-a-chip in the last quarter of this year so we can expect it in mobile devices in early 2011. The Cortex A9 should have about 25% better performance than the A8 if both are run at the same frequencies. Of course, newer manufacturing processes will allow for faster clock speeds or maybe putting two cores on a single SoC.The Eagle core that will supersede the Cortex A8 should bring even more improvements. But ARM plays coy and we’ll have to wait for the official announcement later this year. ARM has partnered with Texas Instruments (who had a say during the design process) and TI will be the first with an Eagle-based CPU out the door. The first products running on Eagle will probably start showing up in 2012 at the earliest (Cortex A8 was announced in 2005 and it’s just now getting replaced). Reportedly it will be worth the wait – ARM is targeting Intel Moorstown level of performance (their x86 platform for mobile devices that hasn’t really take off yet).

Dell Streak launches on AT&T this Friday, a day early for those who pre-ordered

The big phone/small tablet Dell Streak finally has a launch date for AT&T. It’s been on pre-order since late July and if you’ve signed up for that you’d be able to snatch it a day early…The pricing of the Dell Streak has been known for a while – 550 US dollars contract-free or $300 if you put pen to paper on an AT&T contract. If you redeem your pre-sale coupon you can snatch a Plantronics Bluetooth headset for just 99 cents (while supplies last). And you’ll need one too, if you’re going to make use of the phone functionality of the Dell Streak as its screen measures a hefty 5 inches. The OS is Android 1.6 for now but Dell are hard at work to update it to 2.1 Eclair which should also bring 720p video recording to the 5MP camera. The Dell Streak will be available from AT&T starting August 13 (that’s this Friday) or tomorrow if you signed up for the pre-order.
HITTING A SWEET SPOT : The Dell Streak, a carbon black Android-based tablet with a 5-inch display, is designed to provide an excellent “on-the-go” entertainment, social connection, and navigation experience. The spacious 5-inch screen is ideal for experiencing thousands of Android Market widgets, games and applications, all without squinting or compromising portability. Built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth capability and available 3G connectivity brings easy access for downloading and listening to music, updating social networking status in real-time, and staying connected to friends and family through e-mail, text, IM, and voice calls.On-the-go students, mobile professionals, and active families will find Streak’s web-browsing capabilities as natural as a laptop. The 5-inch screen is large enough to present Web pages in their natural form, create a comfortable viewing experience, and make turn-by-turn navigation simple. The Dell Streak is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon solution with integrated 1GHz processor to combine basic functionality and benefits of a laptop in a pocket friendly size. The Dell Streak was designed with the future in mind to support future software, application and platform upgrades.

Samsung Epic 4G for Sprint coming August 31, brings QWERTY and WiMAX along

The Samsung Epic 4G will be available at the end of the month – it’s the first Galaxy S phone with a hardware QWERTY keyboard and WiMAX connectivity. Plus it packs all the goodies characteristic for Galaxy S, 4” SuperAMOLED and all…The Samsung Epic 4G for Sprint packs the screen of the Galaxy S, the 1GHz Hummingbird CPU, the 5MP camera with 720p video and Android 2.1 Eclair with the upgrade to 2.2 Froyo coming soon. But it adds a slide-out QWERTY to the mix and also WiMAX connectivity (hence the 4G moniker). The Samsung Epic 4G will hit stores including RadioShack, Best Buy and Wal-Mart and also Sprint Stores on August 31. You could reserve a phone using this link – and you’ll have to buy it no later than 6 p.m. on September 1. The price is 249.99 US dollars after a mail-in rebate with a 2 year contract.

Windows XP is still king of the desktop computers, Windows 7 passes Vista

Linux may be going strong in the mobile phone world but the desktop is another matter. It’s a Windows world out there and Linux is struggling to break 1%…The Linux kernel is at the basis of quite a few mobile OSes – Android, Maemo (turning into MeeGo) and WebOS being the most popular ones, but there are a few lesser known ones as well. But on the desktop? Windows XP is losing ground but it’s currently at 56%, miles ahead of even its successors. Windows Vista (18.1%) is slowly fading away – Windows 7 (19.1%) has already passed it by a full percent. Mac OS X isn’t doing too hot either, it’s currently sitting at 4.6% after the peak of 5.9% in April.Well, it seems that Microsoft has nothing to worry about with their OSes occupying a total of 93.5% of the market and Windows 7 selling like hotcakes

Motorola DROID 2 unleashed

After DROID comes DROID 2. Logical, huh? Motorola’s newest Android-powered smartphone, the DROID 2, has already made several public appearances without its parents’ permission so it was high time that the company finally announced it officially. As a matter of fact, Motorola’s press release (see the source link) reveals much less than the numerous leaks starring DROID 2.Yeap, it’s much more powerful than the original DROID (known as Motorola MILESTONE on these shores). And a bit sexier, too. On top of that, the DROID 2 comes with a MOTOBLUR-ed Froyo. Along with the other goodies the Android 2.2 comes with, it also brings along a Flash-capable web browser! And that the real 10.1 Flash player deal, not Flash Lite.

The Motorola DROID 2 features a 1GHz processor (nearly twice as fast as the first DROID), double the RAM amount (512MB instead of 256MB) and 8GB of built-in storage (an 8GB microSD card is also included). In addition the QWERTY keyboard has undergone a total make over. The D-pad is gone (it’s place has been taken by four separate arrow buttons) so now there is much more space for the rest of the keys. The result is a way comfier hardware keyboard. By the way, if you want, you can turn the DROID 2 into a Wi-Fi hotspot and make it share your Internet access with up to 5 more Wi-Fi-capable devices. That doesn’t come for free, though. It will set you back another 20 US dollars a month. Ouch! Oh, and one more thing. A DROID 2 R2-D2 special edition will be released in September. A limited number of DROID 2 phones will be redesigned to look like the R2-D2 and will pack exclusive Star Wars content. DROID 2 pre-sale starts tomorrow and the day after that, August 12, should see the device hitting all Verizon Wireless stores. The Motorola DROID 2 is said to cost 200 US dollars (after a 100-US-dollar mail-in rebate with a new 2-year contract). There is no word from Motorola if and when an European DROID 2 version will be launched.

INDIA AND CHINA

A Himalayan rivalry :   Asia’s two giants are still unsure what to make of each other.  But as they  grow, they are coming closer for good and bad.
MEMORIES of a war between India and China are still vivid in the Tawang valley, a lovely, cloud-blown place high on the south-eastern flank of the Himalayas. They are nurtured first by the Indian army, humiliated in 1962 when the People’s Liberation Army swept into Tawang from next-door Tibet. India now has three army corps—about 100,000 troops—in its far north-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, which includes Tawang. With another corps in reserve, and a few Sukhoi fighter planes deployed last year to neighbouring Assam, they are a meaty border force, unlike their hapless predecessors. In 1962 many Indian troops were sent shivering to the front in light cotton uniforms issued for Punjab’s fiery plains. In a weeklong assault the Chinese seized much of Arunachal, as well as a slab of Kashmir in the western Himalayas, and killed 3,000 Indian officers and men. Outside Tawang’s district headquarters a roadside memorial, built in the local Buddhist style, commemorates these dead. At a famous battle site, below the 14,000-foot pass that leads into Tawang, army convoys go slow, and salute their ghosts.Yet China and India are in many ways rivals, not Asian brothers, and their relationship is by any standard vexed—as recent quarrelling has made abundantly plain. If you then consider that they are, despite their mutual good wishes, old enemies, bad neighbours and nuclear powers, and have two of the world’s biggest armies—with almost 4m troops between them—this may seem troubling.

Pocket-lint has died and gone to heaven, the iPADock is the best iPad/iPhone docking solution we have ever seen. Ever.Get this: It can dock and charge two iPads at the same time, or it can dock and charge an iPad and two iPhones, or four iPhones. It is, indeed, the undoubted king of docking and charging... when it comes to combinations of iPads and iPhones, at least. And that's not all, it also has rear-mounted slots to store Apple's Camera Connection Kit. Plus, if you hook it up to a PC or Mac, it has seven USB ports (four of them for power shenanigans only, though), and memory card slots for all manner of formats - Compact Flash, SD, SDHC, SDXC, Sony's MemoryStick and more - helping to tidy the clutter from your desktop. It's even compatible with other Apple devices, such as the iPod touch and Nano, although you will need to get an official Universal Dock Adaptor as it's not included.Unfortunately, here's the rub, it's initially only going to be available in Japan, via retailer PhotoFast , from September. But, at only 5980 yen (roughly £45) it's a veritable bargain if you're planning a visit to the Far East. And the company is currently seeking distributors outside of its home country, so fingers crossed...

PHOTOS: Polaroid 300 instant camera

Pocket-lint got its hands on the first analogue return from Polaroid in the shape of the Polaroid 300 Instant Camera. There's certainly very little compact about it, but the bulk isn't matched by any kind of weight, so you won't have too much hassle in carrying this fun snapper around. The Polaroid 300 Instant Camera uses the company's proprietary self-developing film, has an automatic flash and features four scene settings to add variety and a touch of clarity to your shots. You can shake the picture after you've taken it if you must, but the ink doesn't come out wet.The camera is available in red, black or blue, and costs £79.99 at Firebox and John Lewis. If you're lining it up as a Christmas present you might want to consider a few 10 packs of Polaroid 300 film which come in at £12.99 each.

Philips SHQ4000 headphones review

There are an increasing number of options for those who want a dedicated pair of headphones for sport, be it in the gym or out pounding the pavement. One of the recent companies to throw themselves into sporting endeavour is Philips, joining the likes of Sennheiser (who makes the Adidas range) and Jays in offering sport-specific headphones.Various styles are available and the SHQ4000 on test here are of the neckband type, meaning the headphones are connected by a plastic band that passes around the back of the head. This allows stability without them having to hang off your ear with a hook, or be too firmly wedged into the ear canal. The SHQ4000 will easily sit around your neck securely when you don't want them in your ears - at the end of a run or walking back to the changing room,The Philips SHQ4000 have been sensitively designed to meet the needs of sports enthusiasts. Having put them through their paces, we were impressed with how light and comfortable they were when out on long training runs. The SHQ4000 come in at an affordable price as a second set of headphones for those who want music on the run with destroying their existing headphones. If you are used to wearing your standard iPod white headphones, you'll find the SHQ4000 to be vastly superior too.Lightweight and performing well, we'd recommend the Philips SHQ4000 to runners who like to take their music with them.

Nokia N9 snapped: Nokia Booklet 3G goes mini

We've seen the video, we've heard the rumours, and now we've got more pics of the supposedly new, but yet-to-be-announced Nokia N9 handset. So what do the latest pictures show us? Nothing beyond what we already, supposedly, knew - apart from the fact that it appears it was designed to look like a MacBook Pro or to be more in keeping with a similar Nokia product: the company's netbook offering, the Nokia Booklet 3G.
The device sports a slider QWERTY keyboard with shallow, rubber looking keys and even if it does turn out to be a hoax, then maybe the culprits should get themselves jobs at Nokia R&amp. What do you think? If it is real would you be looking to snap one up? Let us know in the comments below.Either way, with Nokia World scheduled for 14 September in London, hopefully we won't have too long to wait.

Google Street View finds "Dead girl", but is she?

It seems plenty of people around the UK are still just finding out about Google Street View and the wonderful or ghastly things you can find if you look hard enough. The latest find, isn't a flying pair of pliers, but what appears to be a dead girl. Eek.Don't panic, or call the police however, as it has been since found out that it was, in fact, just a girl playing dead, rather than actually being dead.Turns out, 9-year-old Azura, who is now 10 and no doubt enjoying her new found fame, was messing around with a friend in Middle Road, St John’s, Worcester, when the Google Street View car was driving past. Months later when the pictures started appearing online, concerned families started phoning the police to alert them to the supposed crime. Luckily all that had really happened was that Azura had fallen over and was "playing dead" as a prank on her friend … and now it appears the Internet.Coronation Street will "make history" as the first fictional location to feature on Google Street View. A Google car, complete with the roof-mounted camera, has driven down the famous cobbles of Coronation Street to capture the real-life set in 360-degrees. When live, fans of the soap will be able to explore the street virtually on Google Street View and take in the landmarks such as the Rovers Return and The Kabin paper shop. A Google spokesperson added: "This is the first ever TV soap to be photographed for Street View and we're thrilled that soon fans up and down the country will be able to imagine themselves heading down the street to enjoy a pint in The Rovers".

The iPad is "delicious"

The iPad is "delicious" according to Apple in its latest advert, showing off the virtues of the company's internet tablet. The advert, which shows a number of apps including Flipboard, Twitter and Apple's own word processor app Pages, and set to an upbeat Thomas Crown Affair type soundtrack, is snappy and direct to the point. However, just hours after the advert hit the Internet, a parody picking apart Apple's advert has turned up.Instead of popular words, it picks on the negatives of the device that has everyone either praising it or up in arms. Stuff.tv is reporting that Apple is planning to make iPad users pay if they want to upgrade to iOS 4. The premium for multitasking and all the other iOS 4 goodies - around £5. The site claims to have spoken to an Apple source who described the charging plan as "definite". Apple has officially stated that it "doesn't comment on rumours and speculation".If this turns out to be true it will be a big kick in the teeth for iPad owners who have already forked out at least £429 for their tablet, or maybe even as much as £699 for the top of the range model. However, the iPad EULA would suggest that Apple will not be introducing a charge. It reads:“Apple will provide you any iPad OS software updates that it may release from time to time, up to and including the next major iPad OS software release following the version of iPad OS software that originally shipped from Apple on your iPad, for free. For example, if your iPad originally shipped with iPad 3.x software, Apple would provide you with any iPad OS software updates it might release up to and including the iPad 4.x software release. Such updates and releases may not necessarily include all of the new software features that Apple releases for newer iPad models”.So, we've got one site claiming a definite charge from a source and a legal agreement saying that it will come as free. We hope the latter turns out to be true and after the Apple PR disaster of the last few weeks, we think it probably will be.

IKEA kitchen of the future is alive!

IKEA, or to use its snappier title, Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd, has designed a kitchen of the future based on the results of an independently commissioned study.
It revealed that, by 2040, the kitchen will be alive, reading our moods, automatically adjusting lighting to suit, suggesting recipes and even clean itself. It will be intelligent and think for itself, matching and moulding its persona to its owners tastes.
With that in mind, IKEA has created the conceptual SKARP kitchen, a smart room with more gadgets than Batman's utility belt. It will feature synchronised appliances that talk to each other, and iPad style devices, in order to cook or clean at the touch of one button. It's a bit like the current HDMI CEC functionality in home cinema, only with pasta.
The retailer also believes that environmental issues will be of ultra importance in future design: “With the majority of us spending the total of nearly a month in the kitchen over one year, it is the heart of the home”, explains Carole Reddish, deputy managing director of IKEA UK & Ireland. “We think that the economy, social changes, concerns for our health and especially the environment will greatly influence kitchen design in the future".
The SKARP kitchen break down is as follows:
1. Nutrition unit where food is grown without soil.
2. 3D food printer that prints layers of food.
3. Smart fridge that diagnoses nutritional needs with an interactive 3D display.
4. Multi-touch controlled tap for water waste monitoring.
5. Self-cleaning surfaces.
6. Device that monitors nutritional value of ingredients while food is being prepared.
7. Remote-controlled cooker that can be switched on in time for user's arrival home.
8. Retractable shelves.
9. Cabinets on rail system to allow height to be adjusted.
10. Smart energy monitor.
11. Genetically engineered food.
12. Space-saving devices for compact living.
A fair old list of innovations sure, but what about the Jamie Oliver Flavour Shaker? Everybody's got to have one of those, surely? Even if nobody ever uses one.
After all, what else would people give as wedding presents?
What do you think will be in the kitchen of the future? Or even in another room? Let us know in the comments below...

Facebook iPhone app updated, but outside of US can't check in

As promised Facebook has updated its iPhone app bringing with it a number of updates, but most importantly the ability to check in to Facebook Places. However, while the update has been rolled out around the world in the various iPhone App Stores, currently in the UK users will not be able to check-in as when clicking on the Places logo it simply says:"This feature will be available in your region soon. Thank you for your patience".What users will get though, is the ability to set the privacy of individual status updates, set all recipients of inbox messages; and iOS 4 compatibility, by being able to upload photos and videos in the background. There has also been the usual bevy of bug fixes like fixing a delay when commenting on a post or posting a status update, as well as fixing some reliability issues in the news feed.Facebook confirmed, at its conference on Wednesday evening, that it would take some time to roll out the Facebook Places features to all its 500 million and counting users, with American Facebookers getting the chance to "check-in" first.UK users will be able to see check-ins however, just not check-in themselves.Facebook has promised new apps for Android and BlackBerry users.
We will keep you posted.

Nokia Kinetic Concept Design Stands Up On Notifications

Creative designer Jeremy Innes-Hopkins has an interesting concept phone called the Nokia Kinetic. The phone responds to notifications through movement. An electromagnet in the base of the phone allows weight to be shifted which causes the phone to stand up when receiving a call, for example.
To dismiss a call, the user can simply give the phone a gentle tap, causing it to fall back down again and return to standby mode. There’s no word on whether this design will make it to real life, but it’s an interesting concept that could be very useful. Standing up on its own is a much cooler notification than vibrate. We also won’t need to buy an additional phone stand accessory if it can do it by itself.

Would you like to see this kind of technology in upcoming Nokia phones?

iPhone QWERTY keyboard on horizon

3 years down the line and you should be over the fact that the Apple iPhone doesn't have a QWERTY keyboard, but where there's a will there's a way as the saying goes. That's the thinking behind Altamash Jiwani's concept design for the iPhone that would allow users to place a hardware keyboard on the iPhone to make typing that little bit easier, very much like Sony Ericsson tried with the P900 all those years ago.According to Jiwani the concept would be "a QWERTY keyboard that slides over the iPhone, guarding its edges and syncing in as well! The slick body docks in the phone and auto disables the virtual keyboard".Connection would be via an external jack that hooks into place at the bottom of the keys for charging the phone. While the design is unlikely to make it into the real world, because of the need to be an accessory that is officially supported by Apple, we can't help thinking that Jiwani is missing a trick here. Why not simply allow the keyboard to overlay the virtual keys and slide out of place when not in use.To combat the fact that the keys wouldn't work on the capacitive screen we would recommend placing a thin layer of bacon between the keyboard and the iPhone so it can replicate your skin, just like those sausages did in Korea. it's a mad idea, but it might just work.
